Discovering new music

As I am reading a Wall Street Journal (the actual broadsheet!) article about Lily Allen's sophomore effort (dropping February 10), it got me to thinking about how people "discover" new music. Having given up on traditional radio many years ago myself, the usual way that I come about new music or new to me music is thru friends, a blog post about something, MTV (rarely) or through some form of Internet chatter. For example, the Rihanna cover of "Don't Stop the Music" by The Bird and the Bee came to me via EW.com, and then I was able to download the song from arjanwrites.com (awesome blog).

I do love Pandora and am listening to it right now. There is also last.fm, imeem, Hype Machine and thesixtyone. All that's out there, I wonder what place radio has today. Okay, so yes there are many people with cars out there and they all have radios but really how effective is it in breaking a new artists?
