Plea to Hollywood: Please come up with an original idea
Telling new story is hard. Coming up with a completely original idea is difficult. Figuring out a new angle on the human condition is not simple. Wait did I just say the same thing three times? Has this been repetitive? Nothing new has been said has it?
This is how I feel when bombarded my the Hollywood remake. I have not seen the new Hairspray, the new Superman totally sucked as did The Women. Now there are many rumors that films such as The Karate Kid and The Last Dragon are going to be re-made.
WHY??!!!!
First, let's be honest neither of these films are exactly cinematic gold. Though The Karate Kid is light years better than watching Bruce Leroy on any day. Why re-make a mediocre film? This just screams straight to video. Hollywood has enough problems. Why waste money on films and ideas that have already been done? There are so many original ideas out there from filmmakers that are struggling just to get into a festival? Give the general population some credit. They loved Juno. Indie films can become blockbusters. These are ideas can be made cheaply, total investments is less than acquiring the rights to some franchise that has already been beat to death. And trust that Hilary Swank will not reprise her role from The Next Karate Kid, she's moved on and so have we.
