Perils of Living in the Spotlight
When I first became aware of the Gosselin family, it was simply through a special that I saw on TLC. And then they had a weekly show, which I'd watch mostly back to back episodes on a lazy day. The parents were young and the kids cute. And it was just fascinating to think that something like this could happen to a woman that had only been pregnant twice. I like a lot of people, (but not the entire) was enamored with the entire Gosselin family.
Now, however I don't know what to think. On the one hand, I get that people are interested in this family because the parents have chose to put their life out there and as we have seen time and again, reality television can ruin marriages, Newlyweds, anyone? Nick & Jessica seemed happy, but the cameras and the fame that came with it became all too much for them to sustain their relationship. But at least kids weren't involved.
The marital strife the going through is real, and not in a the sense that Spencer and Heidi's relationship was in trouble on The Hills. Their kids will be able to watch their parents strained relationship on DVD for years to come. I think its time the pulled the plug on this show and start dealing with their private issues privately.
The New York Times has a great article about the ratings and the surrounding franchise that has become the Gosselin family.
