Battle of the Bulge .. Part Trois - In Which I want to Eat it All

In today's Times Well Blog they ask the question "What is Normal Eating?". As someone that is struggling to lose weight, the answer to this question provided by a dietician didn't really get to the heart of the matter.

The article cites a broad definition of normal eating by registered dietitian Ellyn Satter. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Normal eating is going to the table hungry and eating until you are satisfied.
  • Normal eating is being able to give some thought to your food selection so you get nutritious food, but not being so wary and restrictive that you miss out on enjoyable food.
  • It is leaving some cookies on the plate because you know you can have some again tomorrow, or it is eating more now because they taste so wonderful.
  • Normal eating is trusting your body to make up for your mistakes in eating.
  • Normal eating takes up some of your time and attention, but keeps its place as only one important area of your life
This is a very broad definition of what normal eating is, because "eating more now because they taste so wonderful" would be me eating a whole bag of potato chips or banana pudding from Magnolia. I guess the real clue here is that we must have balance .
