The State of T.V.
It's November, which means that it's sweeps month. The time when television shows pull out all of the stops to garner big ratings. This is when we get stunt guest appearances and racy episodes. This is also the time of year that shows get canceled. Thus far here are the shows being canceled this season:
Hank (ABC) - This is Kelsey Grammer's second post-Frasier endeavor that has failed to find an audience
Eastwick (ABC) - Based on the movie, which was based on a John Updike book. I like both Rebecca Romjin and Lindsay Price but I wasn't into this show after the first episode.
The Beautiful Life (CW) - Producer by Ashton Kutcher this show was canceled after only a couple of episodes. I never saw the show but I can say that having Mischa Barton on the show didn't help
Dollhouse (Fox) - Joss Whedon's, Eliza Dushku vehicle had such promise after the first season. However, from the first episode of the new season which gave us a reunion of Jamie Bamber (BSG) and Tahmoh Penikett, it didn't have the same vibe. The last episode that aired was excellent. I felt that the plotting has been uneven and the storyline not as compelling.
Southland (NBC) - NBC gave up this show before it even premiered the first episode of season 2. They also failed to promote this show, that was gritty and had great acting. Fortunately for the series, it got picked up by TNT. They'll re-air the first season and the 6 episodes that are in the can so far and if they find an audience more episodes will be ordered. Considering that TNT already has a number of original police dramas, it makes one wonder if they can support another, that said I think that this show has a real chance.
Numb3rs (CBS) - This show has been on for a few seasons and that's all I can say about it.
Shows on a Death Watch
Heroes - was never as good after the first season and original cast member Adrian Pasdar aka Nathan Petrelli is leaving the show
Fringe - liked but not getting the ratings, though network (Fox) seems to be supportive of this show
The Forgotten - Yes, ABC just ordered more episodes but critics aren't digging it
The Jay Leno Show - Yeah, I said it. Because let's face no matter how much NBC wants this to work, it's tanking in the rating and leading to lower ratings the 11 o'clock for local affiliates. It can only go on for so long, before some change is made. Perhaps, limit it to a couple of nights a week. I've discussed this at length before.
