Avatar - The Review
I'll say this first, I had a massive headache after watching this movie and was incredibly thirsty by the time I got out of the theatre.
That said the film was excellent. It did what films are supposed to do, suck you into another world and leave you mesmerized. James Cameron's attention to detail, from the vegetation on Pandora, to the language and culture of the Na'vi is impeccable. The man knows how to create action sequences too, giant birdlike creatures against military planes? It shouldn't work but it did.
But what about the story and the acting, you ask? Well, it is quite simple the natives have a valuable substance on Pandora and the earthlings or "sky people" have ruined their planet and think they have a right to take the precious substance. Is this a political allegory or the love story that Cameron suggests it became during filming or both?
The love story was a bit of a foregone conclusion from the first encounter between the main characters played by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana. (was it just me or was his Australian accent apparent in parts of the movie?)
Cameron's great achievement in this film besides the technical, which are mind blowing and not fully understood by yours truly, is his realization of another civilization and its mores.
