Mixtape Mondays (with a twist)
This week instead of bringing you a new list of music, I decided to tackle the issue of finding new music that you like or at least a testing ground before you download. While Pandora, Grooveshark and lastfm are all quite reliable you won't necessarily find that new indie band that people are buzzing about. Though I was happy to see that Grooveshark had all of the Childish Gambino tracks that I liked because that was an issue that I had with Pandora, not to mention the ubiquity of Michael Buble on that service. So here's what I dug up:
Musicovery- This site help you "discover" music based on your mood of which there are four - Energetic, Dark, Calm or Positive. You can also search for your favorite artists and they have a what's new section as well. (also available as on iPhone app)
RCRD LBL - Offers free music downloads daily. For the indie lover this is a great site to discover new music. They have some well known acts like Fleet Foxes, Cold War Kids, Lykke Li and Kid Sister. The best thing I found today was this cover of Aaliyah's "Are you that somebody" by Anni Rossi
The Sixtyone - It's been a while since I've been on this site and I forgot how much I liked it. Since I've been on they've had bit of a re-design, for the better. The site features new artists and allows them to sell their music directly to listeners. On this site you can "heart" an artist's song and that moves them up the charts and you can also comment, share and download (if available). You can also create a playlist.
The Hype Machine - One of my favorite places to find new music. I discovered Friendly Fires' "Paris" on this site. You can stream music, based "by your favorite artists, your favorite music bloggers and what your friends are favoriting". There is definitely an eclectic mix on this and many artists allow the site to stream an entire album before they on-sale.
Epitonic - This is curated site minded over by editors, DJs, artists, record collectors and music lovers to bring you underground bands.
MySpoonful - a site for new independent music
These are just a few of the sites that are out there. There is also of course good old social networking site MySpace that while less popular these days is still a treasure trove of new music, by popular and lesser known artists.
