The Economics of Entertainment
When I made my rant about wanting my free TV I forgot crucial element "Fringe". I am obsessed with this show, I'm in for the ride with this one like I was with "Lost" (still trying to figure out what was up with Desmond), like the summer I spent mainlining "Battlestar Galatica". FOX, unlike CBS, NBC and ABC is not available on Demand. Can I really wait eight days to see what the hell happened to Peter Bishop?
But back to my point. I went out on Tuesday night (you can read about that here) so I missed "Glee" (apparently I wasn't the only one, ratings were down 29%) and "Raising Hope". Then I was faced with the pay-wall. What's a Glee lover to do, what eight days, so that the you'd be able to catch the second episode before the first is available for free? Frustrating. So I looked into the economy of my options. I can pay $7.99 a month for Hulu Plus, I could get a DVR or just miss the shows. A year of Hulu Plus will costs $95.80 - benefits would be the ability to watch the shows across multiple devices, well some of them at least not to mention access to some movies that are behind the pay wall as well. The DVR would cost an extra $326.40 a year. I just can't fathom giving Time Warner Cable more of my money, it's all too much. And since I cut off Netflix DVDs oh excuse me I mean Qwikster, I have a little extra cash. I may get rid of Netflix streaming eventually if I think that I can survive on Hulu movies, especially since Starz content will be gone from Netflix. That's another $95.80 a year.
No only if I could get Hulu streaming on Wii then I think I may have this problem licked. I have free HuluPlus access for a week. I'm going to test it out and see if it is as satisfying as I think it can be. Or I can just be a shut-in and watch everything live.
Digression: "Fringe" is a show that is doing it all right, suspense, intrigue, engaging characters, thought provoking scenarios, it's all there. The acting last season was phenomenal. It stings that Mireille Enos got an Emmy nomination for "The Killing" but Anna Torv was overlooked. Not to mention John Noble and Joshua Jackson (I'll never see him as Pacey again). It's back on tomorrow night. Watch this to catch up.
