Glued to the TV
Last week during premiere week of the new and returning Fall shows I decided to check out GetGlue. I wanted to find out the point of it really, it's yet another social media application but what is it's purpose. Will my Klout score increase?
From there site this is what they are about:

From there site this is what they are about:
"GetGlue is a leading social network for entertainment.
Users check-in and share what they are watching, listening to and
reading with friends; get fresh recommendations, exclusive stickers,
discounts and other rewards from GetGlue partners".

Stickers, I'm checking-in about TV, movies, books and music for stickers? Is this elementary school? Beyond the stickers what am I getting out of this? Again, like my thoughts on Foursquare I am wondering how this works, it's supposed to bring a social aspect to the un-social act of watching television or any of the other activities you can check into. Does this add value to my experience of watching Terra Nova (I only half watched this so I didn't check-in) to know that a couple thousand people are also watching? Because only like seven people I know are using this. Much like Foursquare it is not an application where I am seeing a lot of use in my circles. Or maybe there are too many social spaces and we just can't keep up with them all. But as someone who will tweet, blog and generally talk your ear off about a variety of entertainment I want to understand GetGlue and why I should use it and what the company thinks that I will get out of it.
On the site you can also "like" media across various categories. I think the point of this is to get recommendations which is fine, but I think that it could be taken a step further. What if you rated movies, tv and books on GetGlue but those "likes" were feed to other services like Amazon or Netflix (if you're still using it) so that your recommendations on those sites were more accurate. I don't know, but I am just wondering what the user is supposed to get out of this deal other than the possibility of getting actual stickers because I think my Trapper Keeper is in storage.
I understand the motivation for networks to join up with the service, it could provide them with a real time gauge of how many people are watching a particular show and what the audience is saying about a particular show. It is also a great way to market new shows and give sneak peeks into the TV season. Ad Age recently began a column listing the top ten trending shows on "Get Glue" from the first list, "True Blood" and "Vampire Diaries" topped the list. I'd like to see a comparison of this list and actual ratings. Do the rankings hold? Are the people watching these shows just more social media oriented than others? Though I admitted to watching the first half of the "Two and a Half Men" premiere I did not check-in when I was actually watching the show. It's embarrassing enough without having it recorded down in the books
At the moment I am working my way to getting actual physical stickers. How? By "liking" various movies, shows, books are music. Also I got to see Kelly Clarkson's newest video. I am just three stickers away from getting physical copies. Yes, I want those damn stickers now, why I don't know but I am thisclose to getting them so it will give me a sense of accomplishment.
