Ted Mosby, RomCom protagonist no woman could ever be

"How I Met Your Mother" is the longest rom-com ever.  It is not a hangout sitcom like "Friends" "Happy Endings" or "New Girl".  It's about one man's never ending story of how he met his wife and we, like his kids are held captive to his version of events.

I like this show and yet I find Ted Mosby hard to like a lot of the time and the past couple of episodes especially so.  He's not going to end up with Robin, the kids know that, we know that and Ted knows that.  And yet, we were left last night with a shred of hope/doubt that there was still a chance.

There are a lot of Ted and Robin 'shippers out there.

SHE IS NOT THE MOTHER. It a'int happening and yet the show has left us with lingering doubts about Barney and Robin's relationship.  Whether or not they actually end up married to each other remains to be seen.

In the trope of the rom-com, our protaganist is cute, quirky and ultimately lovable but just can't seem to find the right one and has a dream that fate will put this person into their lap.  This sounds like Ted Mosby, he just can't seem to get it together and talks a lot about how all the big and minor things led him to the"mother". I have to say that if this show was called How I Met Your Father, it would have been cancelled in the first or second season.  Ted is a needy dreamer and for every good trait there is one that is equally annoying.  He constantly inserts himself into Marshall and Lily's marriage in a way that he should know is wrong and yet he can also be an incredibly good friend.  Having this be about a guy somehow makes his neurotic behavior acceptable.

And I get that it is tough situation to be in, one of your best friends is marrying the girl you have wanted  for the better part of a decade.   Can we just tell him that "she's just not that into you"?  Throughout the show Robin has told Ted repeatedly that she doesn't want to get married but now she's engaged to Barney, the guy that has committed all of the worst sins.  Just like every woman in a rom-com that has deluded herself about guy, Ted can't see who Robin really is and has an idealized version of what a life would be like with her.  Again, if the main protagonist of this show were a woman, how long would this have lasted?

I'm going to root for the reformed (not so much) bad boy and the reluctant to love girl, cause they are awesome.

Robin and Barney are a great couple
